Editorial Announcement South African Computer Journal to go Online

This edition heralds an exciting new phase in the existence of the SA Computer Journal - from 2001 onwards Sabinet Online (Pty) Ltd will be publishing the journal electronically on the Internet! This step has been taken in response to the Internet users’ growing demand for immediate and timely access to information. The decision to produce an electronic version in addition to the hard copy is also in line with the current world-wide trend of making articles available electronically in full-text.

This often occurs through an intermediary service that aggregates the titles from many different publishers under one interface and search system, and at the same time, adds value to the publications by increasing market awareness of the publications, growing their revenue streams, etc.

Sabinet Online has been servicing South African information markets for the past 18 years and, in addition to this, is presently acting as an aggregator of South African publications through its SA ePublications portal. Sabinet Online is a powerful intermediary between publishers and subscribers, and brings with it the know-how, experience, technology and client base to add value to the SA Computer Journal. Most exciting of all, is the fact that articles can now be published electronically as soon as they have been accepted, reviewed and edited, and can then be bound into a hard copy once the required number of articles per volume have been published electronically.

The advantages that subscribers to the SA Computer Journal will derive from Sabinet Online’s electronic publication of the journal, are that:

  • Sabinet Online will do the abstracting of the content of each article by indexing it according to keyword, broad subject, author(s), and title categories. All articles will be fully searchable, with complete ease of access.
  • Sabinet Online will create and market awareness of the content of the SA Computer Journal both locally and internationally, making it readily accessible not only to its present core of subscribers, but also to the vast global population with its healthy number of users
who are likely to access the journal on an article per article basis.
  • Sabinet Online has been granted permission to sell individual articles via its ‘pay-per-view’ e-commerce / bank deposit option. This option, considered to be an important growth market, in particular internationally, is popular among infrequent or ad-hoc users such as
individuals or small organizations. The price per article will probably be in the region of R35, with Sabinet Online and SAICSIT sharing the revenue generated by such sales on a 50/50 basis.
  • Sabinet Online will design a web page for the SA Computer Journal, based on its ePublications template, and will maintain the journal’s web page on an annual basis. The purpose of the web page will be to: brand the journal; host the table of contents (TOC), articles and abstracts of each issue of the SA Computer Journal; display the editorial policy of the SA Computer Journal; present guidelines for prospective authors to submit articles to the SA Computer Journal; broadcast the availability of the SA Computer Jour-nal’s content on the world-wide web to attract new subscribers and ad-hoc users; facilitate access to the full-text; link the web page to the homepage of SAICSIT; and provide an electronic subscription facility, linked to SAICSIT via e-mail.

SAICSIT members should note that the membership fee already incorporates a modest amount to allow access to the electronic version of the journal. Procedures for doing so will be communicated to you separately by the SAICSIT executive.
